Pastoral Prayer
O God, you are the Lord, our shepherd in Psalm 23, the Lord of the shepherds who received the good news of Jesus’ birth by the angels, and the Lord of us as shepherds who are awaiting to see signs of your promise of new life. Your signs of hope are everywhere so we ask that you restore in us the light to shine upon this congregation to give life to our tired routines. Awaken the child in us to experience your revelation.
As we prepare for gatherings of friends and families over these holy days, we pray for the deepening of relationships that reflect how you want to have a loving relationship with us as our Parent and we as your children. Lead us to bring patience and understanding in all that we say and do. May these gatherings reflect your beloved community in our homes as it is in heaven.
The evils of this world are not at a distance but close at hand. Teach us to confront cruelty with your embrace. Have us stand up against injustice with your righteousness. Direct our sight toward those who are on the streets with compassion because these are also your children. And in the quietness of Christmas morning, remind us again that it’s not yet peaceful in other places around the world. Forgive us, Emmanuel, as we repent from our sins and shortcomings.
We lift up in prayer especially those in our midst. For Lee McDaniel to have the enduring perseverance to be incarcerated for the coming months; keep him safe. For Hattie Scott as she adjusts to her Parkinson conditions; for Pastor Allison’s sister, Lori who is struggling with life to find peace and purpose, with Lori’s wife Jodi and with Allison herself as she provides counsel and guidance in their family. For so many with needs and challenges to find healing, recovery, and the opportunity to enjoy another day in your presence. Touch us to lend strength and confidence as we reach out to one another for help and healing.
Righteous God, your gifts of grace and peace are delivered in strange and unexpected places, let your promise of Emmanuel be a sign to us of salvation near at hand. Use us as ministers of your grace and love today. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen.
Benediction
The word of the prophet is finding fulfillment.
Emmanuel is arriving; God is with us.
Surely God’s face shines on us to strengthen us.
Gifts of grace and peace are ours to receive. Amen.
