“Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”

All-Church Event, March 22, 2014

In the Disney movie, Frozen, Anna sings outside Elsa’s door, “Do you want to build a snowman? Come out and play. I never see you anymore. Come out the door. It looks like you have gone away. We used to be the funniest. And now we are not. Do you want to build a snowman?”

When we are active at church in SF Chinatown, we are busy doing things in our different services and classrooms just like how Anna and Elsa were apart separated by a door. Elsa was afraid of hurting Anna with her freezing powers so she kept her distance and stopped building snowmen.

Today, we literally have come out of our different and sometimes separate sanctuaries and classrooms to be together to play, build relationships, become friends, and even possibly build a snowman.

Tomorrow I’ll be preaching from John 4 when Jesus met the woman at the well. Because of who this woman was and the people she knew, none of the other women wanted to be with her. She came to the well to get water for her family and for her cleaning chores at the hottest time of the day to avoid the other women. But Jesus was thirsty and came to this same well and asked the woman for water. And an amazing thing happened. The woman met Jesus the Lord. We can say that they built a snowman and she went back and told everyone about it.

Today, we will strive to be the church that Christ wants us to be. The planning team is composed of people from all three congregations. The Long-range Planning Committee composed of people from all three congregations will lead us in discussions on topics that concern all of us. We’ll have ice-breaker games and singing that will unite us and lead us to be the Body of Christ. We have children, younger and older people who reflect the richness of being God’s whole family. Everyone is coming out to play.

I know that Disney is just Disney. But when Anna and Elsa build Olaf, this funny and loving snowman who loves to be in summer, the sun and the heat, we can do something that that will go beyond any of our imaginations. Now when was the last time, our church built a snowman together! We would be creating a Christian community that is loving and caring and most importantly trusting in God that all things are possible in the Lord.

So let’s come out and play, build a snowman because when we let our light in Christ so shine, we open the doors that separate us and we become God’s people.
