Light Shines in Darkness

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1:5)

With the end of Daylight Savings Time only 2 nights ago, by the time the polls closed in California, it was already dark outside. I couldn’t watch anymore and before going to bed, I texted my adult family members to reassure them and myself that the sun will rise again.

After a restless sleep, I awoke before sunrise to look out toward the east to find that the sun is indeed rising again.

This morning the sun rose again, it is the third day after the Nov. 8th election. During the campaign, I became a political enthusiast. I watched all three debates and the nightly news analyses. I was so sure that those who believe in the beloved community, partnership of men and women, the human and sacred rights of all people, creation justice, personal and corporate responsibility, and the interdependence of human beings on this one planet that we call, Earth will prevail.

There will continue to be analysis on what is happening in our country today. While I voted for one candidate to win, many others voted for the other. As each day unfolds, we will be faced with new challenges in what it means to be one country on this one planet.

After all of this, I know that the sun will rise again each day for me as well as on those who voted differently from me. I am committed in learning about what it’s like when the sun shines on other people. I hope they would be interested in what it is like for me too.

Only a simple preacher, I believe that Christ, the Son of God rose on the third day and the world entirely changed. Whether it’s the sun that casts out all shadows or the Son who casts out all darkness, I am ready to face the day with renewed vigor and strength to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God.” (Micah 6:8b)
