Teresa of Avila was known as the “barefoot” Carmelite nun in Spain in the 1500s. In her teenage years, she loved fashions and romantic novels. But during an illness, she read the works of Jerome and experienced a mystical experience that led her into the convent.
She wrote.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours;
yours are the only hands with which he can do his work,
yours are the only feet with which he can go about the world,
yours are the only eyes through which his compassion
can shine forth upon a troubled world.
