Prayer of God’s People

Almighty God, who has come to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we praise you for your work in creation, for your sacrifice and suffering in our redemption, and for your continuing work in us in our sanctification.

We give thanks that you were determined to be God for us, to come to us, despite the cost, in order that you might have us. In your presence, Lord, we pray for our brother, Lester Hom as he restores his health today. Grant him mercy and watch over him and his family today. We pray for the thousands of people who are working to stop the oil spill disaster that is harming your creation. Be with all the things that you have placed in our hands to care for—all sheep and oxen, the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea. Teach us again to be mindful of your beautiful creation as you have been mindful of us.

On this Memorial Day Weekend, we remember all those who have completed their lives on earth and now have returned to you in the heavenly places. While we miss them as we knew them in this physical world, we still have them living in our memories and in our hearts to guide us in our ways and to pass their wisdom to future generations. We remember the countless men and women who answered the call to military service at times of great crisis. Thank you, O God, for our loved ones who have made a difference in our lives and for the safety of our country.

We gather this day to worship, eager to learn more about you, our Lord, happy to spend more time with you, wanting to come close to you because you have, in so many times and places of our lives, come so close to us. We know you, O Lord, our Lord because Jesus Christ taught us to pray together, “Our Father…”

Offertory

Step by step, mile by mile, hope against hope, until the dream of your will, done on earth as it is in heaven, is dream no longer but our present reality—step by step, the first step today in our offering.

Dear Lord, these are our offerings, first fruits of our livelihoods, symbols of our love for you and for your work, drawing all people into one body of devotion and joy. Accept this offering in the spirit in which it is given. These things we pray to you, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Amen.

Benediction

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

God is mindful of you.

You are made just a little lower than God and crowned with glory and honor.

Look up and then look down to care for all living creatures.

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
