Hair, There and Everywhere

I am blessed with a personal barber. Since the pandemic prevented me from Yaini cutting my hair, my wife has been my barber.

She has professional scissors to achieve a tight cut while she comments that I am balding. She shaves the back of my neck that only others can see. She always asks if it’s short enough because I like it that way and besides it needs to last at least 5 weeks.

In everything I need to do for personal hygiene, I can do for myself, except cutting my hair. While I can trim the hair above my ears in between my 5-week cuts, I can’t do the rest. I often say why do hair grow so fast; even the white ones!

Before my haircut, I would lay down newspapers on the floor. This would catch most of the hair before vacuuming the rest. But the newspaper I usually lay down is the full obituary pages. I look down at these faces. I was told by a funeral director that hair continues to grow a bit after one pass and that they still need to do some trimming before the viewing.

Hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin. Keratin is also found in skin and nails. Since hair is made up of dead cells, it’s the reason why it doesn’t hurt when we get our crown trimmed or cut.

When I sit for my haircut and see all the people whose lives have passed, I can be thankful that my hair is still growing. And I am very thankful that I have a personal barber who makes me look good every five weeks!
