Chinglish: 2005 Family Camp

Family Camp—2005 “Chinglish”

Living in America means that our Chinese culture has blended with western culture to produce a rich and creative multicultural Asian American way of life. Many speak a “Chinglish” colloquialism that combines Chinese and English in our daily conversations. As we raise our children, what kind of cultural strengths will they have to effectively participate in our pluralistic world? (From conference brochure)

In our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power. (Acts 2:11b)

Saturday—Growing Up Bicultural (1 hour)

2. Bible Study—Moses—Exodus 2 (Tim)                                                                 (20)

Although Moses was raised up in an Egyptian palace, he defended a Hebrew and watered some Hebrew shepherds’ flocks at the expense of the Egyptians. Moses was feeling alienated in a foreign land.

Flor and daughter Christina translating anger when John interfered in the way Flor raises her daughter in regards to the value of money. Being in a foreign home, there are value conflicts.

God’s Good News in Jesus Christ is given to both Jews and Gentiles alike. The Gentiles don’t need to become like the Jews to receive God’s grace.

Flor asks, “Is what you want for yourself is to become someone different than me?” And Christina realizes that even if she is admitted to Princeton, what defines her is “I am my mother’s daughter.”

Monday Morning—Negotiating Racial Domination (1 ½ hour)

Beginning of the movie when Flor decides to leave Mexico and cross the border illegally to the US. Christina says, “She will be my Mexico.” Also, show the deleted scene when Flo and Christina board a plane to leave and a white pilot tries to make a pass to Flor.

The dominant Babylonians try to influence Daniel and his three friends by giving them royal food to eat. They refused to defile themselves and eventually showed that they became filled with wisdom, insight, and visions.
