Knowing the love of God for all creation has led some to live with compassion for all living things, including animals systemically raised for human consumption. When we know that someone is hurting, we are all hurting. When we know that animals we raise to consume are hurting, we also sense that hurting and wish not to participate in such industries. Like other faith communities that have reflected on such convictions, there’s been a growing number of American Baptists who have made commitments to compassionate living by becoming vegan or pursuing a journey toward a plant-based diet.
I propose that an initial gathering of key ABC leaders meet for the purpose of articulating this vision for ABC and sharing resources and practices. To begin, the gathering would identify others who can share stories of compassionate living. Joint efforts may lead to identifying and developing educational resources to share with others. And in the end, the hope is that more American Baptists would consider living compassionately with all the creatures whom God has made.
