Dr. Martin Luther King as a civil rights leader, a prophet and also a Baptist minister believed that civil rights will lead to a more equitable society. The acts of non-violence and peaceful resistance will lead to reconciliation among people and to a redeemed world. King was following the footsteps of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

King popularized the notion of the \u201cBeloved Community.\u201d King envisioned the Beloved Community as a society based on justice, equal opportunity, and love of one\u2019s fellow human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As explained by The King Center<\/a>, the memorial institution founded by Coretta Scott King to further the goals of Martin Luther King:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. King\u2019s Beloved Community is a global vision in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Beloved Community\u201d is a term that was first coined in the early days of the 20th Century by the philosopher-theologian Josiah Royce, who founded the Fellowship of Reconciliation. However, it was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., also a member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, who popularized the term and invested it with a deeper meaning which has captured the imagination of people of goodwill all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beloved Community is also a biblical image of God\u2019s plan for creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God\u2019s plan begins with the Imago dei<\/em> to mean In God\u2019s own image<\/em> in Genesis 1:27<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So God created humankind[<\/sup>a<\/sup><\/a>]<\/sup> in his image,
    in the image of God he created them;[<\/sup>b<\/sup><\/a>]<\/sup>
    male and female he created them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The significance of human creation continues in Psalm 8:3-9<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars that you have established;
4 <\/sup><\/strong>what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
    mortals[<\/sup>a<\/sup><\/a>]<\/sup> that you care for them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 <\/sup><\/strong>Yet you have made them a little lower than God,[<\/sup>b<\/sup><\/a>]<\/sup>
    and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 <\/sup><\/strong>You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
    you have put all things under their feet,
7 <\/sup><\/strong>all sheep and oxen,
    and also the beasts of the field,
8 <\/sup><\/strong>the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
    whatever passes along the paths of the seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup><\/strong>O Lord, our Sovereign,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While human beings have not always lived up to the creatures whom God hoped for and created to be, we know that God\u2019s desire is to continue to save us. We see this in Abraham and Sari, in Moses, in the practice of Jubilee, in Old Testament Israel, and in Jesus Christ, the New Covenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creation that God desires is depicted in The Peaceable Kingdom in Isaiah 11:6-9<\/a> when the world is in peace, harmony, and life-giving according to God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wolf shall live with the lamb,
    the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
    and a little child shall lead them.
7 <\/sup><\/strong>The cow and the bear shall graze,
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 <\/sup><\/strong>The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,
    and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder\u2019s den.
9 <\/sup><\/strong>They will not hurt or destroy
    on all my holy mountain;
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have this vision of a Beloved Community in a society based on justice, equal opportunity, and love of one\u2019s fellow human beings. We have this biblical vision of a Beloved Community according to God\u2019s plan. But we know that we are not where we need to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church, the community of disciples is the earthly, worldly representative of Jesus Christ striving to emulate the Beloved Community until Kingdom come. We, the church, are to embody as much as we possibly can to see evidence of justice, harmony, equal and life-giving opportunities and love of one\u2019s fellow human beings here on earth as we know it is already in heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the many passages in the New Testament that describes the church is in 1 Peter 2<\/a> when Christ is the cornerstone of our spiritual house and that we are the \u201cchosen living stones.\u201d In 1 Peter 2:9-10<\/a>, it reads,<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup><\/strong>But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God\u2019s own people,[<\/sup>a<\/sup><\/a>]<\/sup> in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 <\/sup><\/strong>Once you were not a people,
    but now you are God\u2019s people;
once you had not received mercy,
    but now you have received mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As \u201cGod\u2019s own people\u201d today in the reality of the global pandemic when Anti-Asian racism is happening, what is the role and responsibility of the church, \u201cGod\u2019s own people?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Racism and the Church\u2019s Responsibility<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. When have you seen the church stand up against racism?<\/li>
  2. How might FCBC bear witness of love, respect and justice today?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    How is King\u2019s Beloved Community a prescription for a healthy society?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Racism<\/strong> \u2013 prejudice, apartheid, ethnic conflict, anti-Semitism, sexism, colonialism, homophobia, ageism, discrimination against disabled groups, stereotypes\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cRacism is a philosophy based on a contempt for life. It is the arrogant assertion that one race is the center of value and object of devotion, before which other races must kneel in submission. It is the absurd dogma that one race is responsible for all the progress of history and alone can assure the progress of the future. Racism is total estrangement. It separates not only bodies, but minds and spirits. Inevitably it descends to inflicting spiritual and physical homicide upon the out-group.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    THE BELOVED COMMUNITY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe Beloved Community\u201d is a term that was first coined in the early days of the 20th Century by the philosopher-theologian Josiah Royce, who founded the Fellowship of Reconciliation. However, it was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., also a member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, who popularized the term and invested it with a deeper meaning which has captured the imagination of people of goodwill all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For Dr. King, The Beloved Community was not a lofty utopian goal to be confused with the rapturous image of the Peaceable Kingdom, in which lions and lambs coexist in idyllic harmony. Rather, The Beloved Community was for him a realistic, achievable goal that could be attained by a critical mass of people committed to and trained in the philosophy and methods of nonviolence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dr. King\u2019s Beloved Community is a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood. In the Beloved Community, international disputes will be resolved by peaceful conflict-resolution and reconciliation of adversaries, instead of military power. Love and trust will triumph over fear and hatred. Peace with justice will prevail over war and military conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dr. King\u2019s Beloved Community was not devoid of interpersonal, group or international conflict. Instead he recognized that conflict was an inevitable part of human experience. But he believed that conflicts could be resolved peacefully and adversaries could be reconciled through a mutual, determined commitment to nonviolence. No conflict, he believed, need erupt in violence. And all conflicts in The Beloved Community should end with reconciliation of adversaries cooperating together in a spirit of friendship and goodwill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As early as 1956, Dr. King spoke of The Beloved Community as the end goal of nonviolent boycotts. As he said in a speech at a victory rally following the announcement of a favorable U.S. Supreme Court Decision desegregating the seats on Montgomery\u2019s busses, \u201cthe end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the Beloved Community. It is this type of spirit and this type of love that can transform opponents into friends. It is this type of understanding goodwill that will transform the deep gloom of the old age into the exuberant gladness of the new age. It is this love which will bring about miracles in the hearts of men.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An ardent student of the teachings of Mohandas K. Gandhi, Dr. King was much impressed with the Mahatma\u2019s befriending of his adversaries, most of whom professed profound admiration for Gandhi\u2019s courage and intellect. Dr. King believed that the age-old tradition of hating one\u2019s opponents was not only immoral, but bad strategy which perpetuated the cycle of revenge and retaliation. Only nonviolence, he believed, had the power to break the cycle of retributive violence and create lasting peace through reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In a 1957 speech, Birth of A New Nation<\/em>, Dr. King said, \u201cThe aftermath of nonviolence is the creation of the beloved community. The aftermath of nonviolence is redemption. The aftermath of nonviolence is reconciliation. The aftermath of violence is emptiness and bitterness.\u201d A year later, in his first book Stride Toward Freedom, Dr. King reiterated the importance of nonviolence in attaining The Beloved Community. In other words, our ultimate goal is integration, which is genuine inter-group and inter-personal living. Only through nonviolence can this goal be attained, for the aftermath of nonviolence is reconciliation and the creation of the Beloved Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In his 1959 Sermon on Gandhi<\/em>, Dr. King elaborated on the after-effects of choosing nonviolence over violence: \u201cThe aftermath of nonviolence is the creation of the beloved community, so that when the battle\u2019s over, a new relationship comes into being between the oppressed and the oppressor.\u201d In the same sermon, he contrasted violent versus nonviolent resistance to oppression. \u201cThe way of acquiescence leads to moral and spiritual suicide. The way of violence leads to bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers. But, the way of non-violence leads to redemption and the creation of the beloved community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The core value of the quest for Dr. King\u2019s Beloved Community was agape love. Dr. King distinguished between three kinds of love:  eros, \u201ca sort of aesthetic or romantic love\u201d; philia, \u201caffection between friends\u201d and agape, which he described as \u201cunderstanding, redeeming goodwill for all,\u201d an \u201coverflowing love which is purely spontaneous, unmotivated, groundless and creative\u201d\u2026\u201dthe love of God operating in the human heart.\u201d He said that \u201cAgape does not begin by discriminating between worthy and unworthy people\u2026It begins by loving others for their sakes\u201d and \u201cmakes no distinction between a friend and enemy; it is directed toward both\u2026Agape is love seeking to preserve and create community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In his 1963 sermon, Loving Your Enemies<\/em>, published in his book, Strength to Love, Dr. King addressed the role of unconditional love in struggling for the beloved Community. \u2018With every ounce of our energy we must continue to rid this nation of the incubus of segregation. But we shall not in the process relinquish our privilege and our obligation to love. While abhorring segregation, we shall love the segregationist. This is the only way to create the beloved community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One expression of agape love in Dr. King\u2019s Beloved Community is justice, not for any one oppressed group, but for all people. As Dr. King often said, \u201cInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.\u201d He felt that justice could not be parceled out to individuals or groups, but was the birthright of every human being in the Beloved Community. I have fought too long hard against segregated public accommodations to end up segregating my moral concerns,\u201d he said. \u201cJustice is indivisible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In a July 13, 1966 article in Christian Century Magazine, Dr. King affirmed the ultimate goal inherent in the quest for the Beloved Community: \u201cI do not think of political power as an end. Neither do I think of economic power as an end. They are ingredients in the objective that we seek in life. And I think that end of that objective is a truly brotherly society, the creation of the beloved community\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In keeping with Dr. King\u2019s teachings, The King Center embraces the conviction that the Beloved Community can be achieved through an unshakable commitment to nonviolence. We urge you to study Dr. King\u2019s six principles and six steps of nonviolence, and make them a way life in your personal relationships, as well as a method for resolving social, economic and political conflicts, reconciling adversaries and advancing social change in your community, nation and world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
